Sanyo VPC-GH2 High definition Camcorder Review
The Sanyo VPC-GH2 High definition Camcorder is a great buy in a convenient little package. The design is a bit traditional, but it’s compact, lightweight at 5.4 ounces, and portable. Although not the most robust, this tiny, pocket camcorder fits well in the palm of the hand.
The GH2 records high quality, full HD 1080, 60i videos at 12X digital zoom. It records the videos in MPEG4 format, which is compressible quite easily, making it a breeze to share the videos online or on an iPod. The camcorder has an excellent boot time of just 1.7 seconds. The recording and zoom buttons can be accessed with the thumb, although the zoom button itself could be a little difficult to operate while recording, especially with one hand. Menu can be easily accessed as well, and navigation is easy. The LCD is a convenient 2.7 inches, but one of the best features is its ability to flip at 285 degrees angle. This enables the camera to shoot great videos from a variety of positions, without shaking, that could be very difficult otherwise.
The GH2 also has an in-built 14 megapixel still-photo digital camera, with 5X optical zoom. One of its good features is the sequential shooting mode which allows capture of multiple shots in sequential order – this is particularly great for shooting subjects in motion. The camera also maintains proper lighting and focus on the moving subjects. The photo stabilizer feature takes two simultaneous shots at different shutter speeds, allowing it to combine benefits of both shutter speeds – this reduces the image blur to a great extent. The camera also compensates well for unintentional hand shake during shootings. Another good aspect is its face detection technology, that recognizes faces of even multiple subjects, and optimizes focus on each person.
Indoor flash is good, and while the indoor video is not the greatest, the high gain feature does allow capture of usable video even in low light conditions. With the microphone actually facing the subject, the audio is exceptionally good as well. Additionally, the auto-focus is good, and the macro-focus is excellent for shooting miniature objects from close up.
The GH2 can take up to 64 GB next generation SDXC memory card. This can be particularly useful when taking long video clips – but it’s a good idea to have an extra battery handy for such long video shoots. Its standard Lithium ion battery shoots a static video for about 70 minutes; but when shooting several HD video clips and flash pictures in the field, using zoom, it does tend to run out in less than an hour. The camera can be easily connected to a digital TV via a mini HDMI output, and also to a computer via a USB 2.0. It is Windows 7 compatible.
All said, for the price of under $200, it’s hard to beat the value provided by the Sanyo VPC-GH2 High definition Camcorder plus 14 MP Camera.
