High definition Fishing
Turn on any fishing show on TV and you will see advertisements on Lowrance fish finders. They are very popular among fishermen who want to see what is in the water under their boat. Lowrance has many varieties and sizes. One of the most popular models is the HDS-5x. This is a sonar type fish finder, without GPS, that comes in three versions. You can get it with a 83/200 transducer, a 50/200 transducer, or no transducer. The transducer is the “eye” of the fish finder. It sends out the sound waves and then receives them back and then sends them to the unit. The unit then transforms these sound waves into a picture on a screen. The HDS 5X has a nice size 5 inch screen. The HDS 5x is actually the smallest of the HDS systems. They go up to a 10 inch screen on the HDS 10.
The HDS models are feature rich. The HDS 5x has the following:
1. Display. This unit has a nice bright 480 x 480 pixel display for a clear presentation of the sonar interpretation. It also features a sunlight viewable display which is very important while out on the lake. The screen is also back lit.
2. High definition. These Lowrance models have high definition utilizing high tech broadband sounders. You will also get phenomenal separation of fish targets from structure, baitfish, thermoclines (variations in water layer temperature), clutter and bottom. This will help tremendously in finding what you really want; big fish! Peerless bottom tracking allows you to get closer with 8x power zoom range. A bonus feature of the High Def is that you can choose your color palette of your display.
3. Interface. The HDS units have a more attractive case that is easier to install. The menu is designed with easier access to the most used features.
4. Networking Capability. With NMEA 2000, these units have the ability to monitor bait wells and live well temps, as well as fuel flow, fuel levels, and more.
Fish finding technology has come a long way in the last several years. The HDS 5x with the 83/200 lists for $599. If you have deeper pockets and want the 10 inch models with all the bells and whistles you will have to shell out over $2700. Most of the HDS units that are higher priced than the HDS 5x also have GPS capability.
In short, the Lowrance HDS systems allows crystal clear clarity, greater shallow water detail and coverage, and incredible deep water performance. What more could a fisherman ask for from a fish finder?
